FAR Training (First Aid Response) Support


Under the Child Care Act 1991 (Early Years Services) Regulations 2016, a new regulatory requirement will come into force from June 1st, 2020. From then under Regulation 25, there must be a person(s) who has trained in FAR (First Aid Response) with a trainer approved by the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC) available at all times.

Tusla registered Services/Childminders can claim back the cost of one person attending FAR (either full or refresher) on behalf of your service. To do this is easy; you must submit the attached application form with a copy of the FAR certificate and a receipt for the cost of the course. The maximum that can be claimed is €225 per full course and €175 per refresher course.

The training: on completion of this 3-day/18 hr course, the First Aid Responder will be equipped with the necessary practical skills, knowledge and confidence to give effective life support, diagnose and treat injuries or illness, and maintain care and comfort of a patient who has become suddenly ill or injured in the workplace or elsewhere until the arrival of emergency medical services.

There is only one remaining application date before the fund closes in June.

The fund will close in June with no further applications accepted so make sure you get a course booked soon.

The procedure will be as follows:

  1. Services will book training through a PHECC registered FAR trainer using either www.phecit.ie or this  list of trainers  
  2. A member/members of staff will complete the FAR training course (full training or refresher depending on their requirements)
  3. Services will pay the registered Far trainer for the course.


Once the course is completed:

  1. Providers may apply for reimbursement of payment for 1 staff member to the maximum of €225 for 3 day course or €175 for 2 day refresher course
  2. In order to apply for reimbursement the provider must submit the following to elizabeth@southdublinchildcare.ie 

(a) Completed  reimbursement form

(b) Copy of receipt

(c) Copy of certificate 

(all 3 items must be attached to the email)


Please be advised there are significant variances in the prices charged by different providers however maximum reimbursement amounts apply. It is up to the services to find a trainer who offers the training within the maximum reimbursement price range or alternatively providers can choose to fund part of the course themselves. Once the service has claimed for one staff member no further reimbursement applications will be accepted from that service.
